Code for Impact

Code for Impact

A collaborative development community for small open source repos

What it is

There are many small not-for-profits and social enterprises that maintain and use their own open-source repos to do a lot of impactful work. However, they can neither afford to hire a large number of coders to develop and maintain their projects, nor do they get the same support from the open source community that large or famous open-source repos do. Code for Impact aims to bring such small social-impact-based organisations and their open source repos under one roof. Contributors can either browse through the repos and decide to contribute by themselves, or contribute by enrolling to contribute via Code for Impact. Enrolling to contribute through Code for Impact gives the contributor access to project management tools, guidance from the repo’s lead developer, peer-support via a slack channel, and after 6 months of active contribution, a certificate mentioning their contribution and thanking them for it. Enrolling to contribute through Code for Impact also gives the member organisation the ability to receive contributions in a predictable manner. This website and the Code for Impact project is maintained jointly and cooperatively by member organisations.

Benefits

For the contributor

  • An opportunity to be part of a real-life project and to learn how to navigate the coding and non-coding parts of being a coder in the real world.
  • The increased sense of purpose that comes from working with an organisation that really needs help and also does impactful work.
  • Peer support from fellow contributors on a dedicated slack channel, mentorship and guidance from the maintainers of the repos you work with.
  • A really cool, impactful learning and work experience to boast about on your CV, and a certificate detailing your work and thanking you for it, after 6 months of active contribution.

For member organizations

  • Your repo will be featured on the Code for Impact website
  • A solution to the problem of not being able to afford to hire a number of talented coders to develop and maintain your open source repos
  • More consistent contributions to your repo, than from the wider open-source community
  • Better maintenance of quality of code and deadlines, due to robust project management, peer accountability and code review systems
